While surfing the net, I came across a magazine "DrummerPro Jazz" (2003) that had interviewed me regarding perspectives from non drummers. Although it has been a few years, I had never seen the article until now and had forgotten all about it, I'm not even sure if the magazine is active but it was all news to me. It also included an article on Tony Williams that may be of intrest.

I had a great time recently spending a litle time jamming, eating, and hanging, with fellow guitarist, friend, and inspiration, Mark Whitfield as he was touring with Chris Botti... what a great band backing Chris... James Genus, Peter Martin, Mark, Sy Smith, and now one of my favorite drummers Billy Kilson!!!!... What a great pocket and feeeeeling!!! This man dances with drums and makes the listener dance or move something by default. It is so good to hear fellow musicians doing their thing on such an inspiring high level to recharge the creative batteries... What a great suprise it was to run into Luis Garcia in the airport. Luis is one of my favorite arrangers and has been the musical director for the salsa singing icon Cheo Feliciano for years. "Back in the day" Luis was very kind and encouraging by allowing me to hang out in the recording studios and copy the parts from his musical scores to be passed out to the musicians at the sessions. I am always grateful for the the musical inspiration and the valuable lessons I learned from one of my musical heroes at such a crucial time in my development. We ended up on the same flight sitting across from each other and got caught up on several years as he continued to France to direct a concert of Cheo. Gracias Luis por todo. SYNOPSIS
I have always been interested in the study of the African
Diaspora and its impact on folkloric and popular music
throughout the countries of the Americas in particular. The
African influence is highlighted, amongst other disciplines, by
the prolific, sophisticated, and noble use of the drum.
This subject, which is worthy of serious study, can now be
found in university curriculum in the area of ethnomusicology
or social anthropology. Of course, though there is not
sufficient space here to expand on the theme, I humbly
present a limited version of some of the numerous rhythms of
popular music throughout the Diaspora in the Americas. They
may sometimes be typical in nature and at other times an
experimental hybrid. For example:
ALIENTO DE VIDA (Breath of Life) Our intent is to mix the
bomba sica rhythm of Puerto Rico with the samba of Brazil. •
AMPARO Y FORTALEZA (Help and Strength) We utilize the
bomba sica rhythm of Puerto Rico and the harmony is based
on a typical 12 bar blues from the U.S. • HORACIO This,
another version of the cha-cha rhythm of the Afro-Cuban
tradition, was melodically inspired by the Horace Silver
composition “Song for my Father” which was originally
dedicated to his Cape Verdean father. • STELLA BY
STARLIGHT Employs the ubiquitous backbeat of popular
music from the U.S., which is felt strongly on beats 2 and 4.
The interpretation of this style is similar to the “go-go” style
of Washington, DC. • LA FE DE UN NIÔ˜O (The Faith of a
Child) Our version of the Brazilian samba. • LA PUERTA
ESTRECHA (The Narrow Door) The highlighted rhythm here
is the cha-cha with a very small sliver of the Afro-Cuban 6/8
rhythm on the bridge. • PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL
BLESSINGS FLOW (Doxology) A subtle interpretation of a
New Orleans second line groove.

SINOPSIS
Siempre me ha interesado el estudio de la diáspora Africana y
particularmente como ha impactado el folclor y la música
popular en los países de las américas.
La influencia Africana se destaca por medio del uso prolífico,
sofisticado y noble del tambor entre otras disciplinas.
Este tema, digno de estudios serios, hoy en día forman parte
de cursos universitarios en el área de etnomusicología o socioantropología.
Por supuesto aquí no hay espacio suficiente
para ampliar el tema. Sin embargo he aquí mi humilde
expresión musical de una versión limitada de algunos de los
numerosos ritmos de la música popular que se encuentran a
través de la diáspora en las américas; a veces típicos, a veces
híbridos experimentales. Por ejemplo:
ALIENTO DE VIDA Intentamos mezclar el ritmo de bomba
sicá de Puerto Rico con la samba de Brasil. • AMPARO Y
FORTALEZA Utilizamos el ritmo de bomba sicá de Puerto Rico
y la armonía se basa en la forma de “blues” típico de doce
compases de los EEUU. • HORACIO Otra versión del ritmo
cha-cha-chá de la tradición afro-cubana fue melódicamente
inspirada por la composición de Horace Silver titulada “Song
for my Father,” la cual fue originalmente dedicada a su padre
Caboverdeño. • STELLA BY STARLIGHT Emplea el ubicuo
“backbeat” típico de la música popular de los EEUU que se
deja sentir al acentuar el pulso fuertemente en el 2 y 4 del
compás. La interpretación del “afinque” en este caso es un
poco característica del estilo “go-go” de Washington DC. • LA
FE DE UN NIÔ˜O Es nuestra versión de la samba brasileña. •
LA PUERTA ESTRECHA Se destaca el ritmo cha-cha-chá con
un trocito del ritmo seis por ocho de la tradición afro-cubana
en el puente. • PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS
FLOW (Doxology) Cuenta con una interpretación sutil del ritmo
